Dare to Take by Carly Phillips Review

She was off limits,
But he couldn’t resist.

There are just some guys you don’t touch–even someone as innocent and inexperienced as Ella Shaw knows that. But when her brother’s best friend is up for grabs and willing, she can’t resist. After all, she’s wanted him for years…

On leave from the army, Tyler Dare is just looking for a little fun, but his best friend’s sister is off limits. Yet unable to deny how sexy and alluring she is, he finds it all too easy to succumb to a night of passion and heat that ends the next morning in the worst way possible.

Now, Ella is stranded on a tropical island with a hurricane bearing down, and only Tyler can save her. It’s his chance to make amends for the past and show the woman he’s never forgotten that he’s coming after her . . . in more ways than one.

Dare to Take (Dare to Love, #6)

I haven’t read the previous books in this series. Although this can be read as a standalone, I think that those who have read the other books will enjoy this one more. The story is mainly about Ella and Tyler, but the rest of the family plays a big part.
Tyler was Ella’s first. It was a mistaken, drunken romp that has hindered their friendship for years. They’re in each other’s lives a lot and always end up fighting because of left over bad feelings and ignored attraction. Both also have lots of family issues to face. Tyler especially has some growing up to do. An attack on Ella puts them together, and their true emotions finally come to the surface.
Dare to Take is about two people getting over past hurts and focusing on what direction they really want their lives to go. Fans of the other books will be happy to know that families matters like weddings and babies happen along the way for some of the couples. If you love to read about big close-knit families and erotic sexy times, you should check it out.

Forever Pucked by Helena Hunting Review

Being engaged to Alex Waters, team captain and the highest paid NHL player in the league, is awesome. How could it not be?
In addition to being an amazing hockey player, he’s an incurable romantic with an XL heart, and an XXL hockey stick in his pants. And he knows how to use it. Incredibly, orgasmically well. Alex is the whole package and more. Literally. Like his package is insane. Total world record holder material.
So it makes complete sense that Violet Hall can’t wait to nail him down to the matrimonial mattress and become Mrs. Violet Waters.
It’s so romantic.
Violet is totally stoked to set a date.
Eventually. At some point. Likely before the next millennium. Or when Violet stops getting hives every time someone brings up the wedding, and their mothers stop colluding on stadium sized venues. Whichever comes first.

Forever Pucked (Pucked, #4)

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
If you’ve read the other books in the series, you know Violet is pretty crazy. She still brings a lot of comedy to Forever Pucked, loading it with silly fun, but this book has lots of heart moments too. I found several parts really touching.
I love how some of the hockey players, friends, lovers and families have formed a special little group. Each person brings his or her own unique personality to the overall makeup. No matter if the outside world would consider one of them to be ditzy, klutzy, promiscuous, mental, style-challenged, moody or whatever, they all have a special spot in their circle which couldn’t be filled by anyone else.
Alex and Violet definitely have a unique wedding. Of course it has ridiculous bits, but I wasn’t expecting as much sweetness. This book may have made me a little emotional a few times.
Fans of the series will not be disappointed. I’m excited to read more about this special bunch, and I’m really looking forward to getting inside Lance’s head.

Stain by Francette Phal Release Day Review

“You’re like the sun…and I’m the stupid moon. Always chasing after you.”

I didn’t know it was possible to fall so deeply into someone. To drown so strongly into their bottomless depths coming up for air was unfathomable. Until he comes along, with his sun-hot radiance, and eclipses the candle that is me. He’s Lucifer before the fall, beautiful but the devil is in the way he looks at me. In the way his touch brands his name across every inch of my skin. His kisses possess my soul in the most sinful of ways.

Maddox Moore is my beginning and my end. Protector, friend, and lover—he’s become my sole religion. At his side I become fearless, in his arms I burn to cinders, and in worshiping him I lose myself and discover the person he sees in me. But nothing is forever. Moments are ephemeral. No matter how much you want something life inevitably reminds you that you can’t have it.

I’m damaged. He’s broken. We’re both covered in stains. Stains that make it impossible for us to hold onto each other.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Maddox and Aylee are orphans, almost adults and victims of physical and sexual abuse. Before even knowing the other’s story, they’re drawn to one another. Dealing drugs, delivering violence and working the sex industry are how he stays ahead of his demons. She cuts herself and tries to disappear. Outwardly, he’s a gangbanger and she’s a good girl. No one knows what they really are inside.
Stain is a dark story, but in its way, the courtship between Maddox and Aylee is sweet. Seeing two damaged people, who previously seem dead inside, open up and fall in love is a beautiful thing. Of course, in the life they’ve been given, romance isn’t really an attainable quality.
This author has a talent for making anti-heroes that you can’t help but love. Maddox isn’t as bad on the evil scale as some, but he isn’t exactly a good guy either. He has major anger issues and has no need for people except to use them. This isn’t the darkest book ever, but just a warning; it does have rape and murder themes. If your reading tastes lean this direction, you should definitely check it out.

MIDDLE OF KNIGHT by Jewel E. Ann Review

Book 2 in the Jack & Jill Series – NOT a standalone.
The living seek forgiveness. The dead seek revenge.
A first love.
A last breath.
A haunting past.
Armed with a sinful past and an equally sinful body, Jackson Knight absolves his vow of celibacy to pursue Sergeant Monaghan’s unsuspecting—older—housekeeper.
Ryn Middleton, on the cusp of turning forty with a snarky daughter, a killer dog, and an abusive ex-husband, finds Jackson’s advances humorous and unbelievable. After intense negotiations including Vera Wang, Ed Sheeran, and sex four times a day, Ryn accepts Jackson’s marriage proposal on their first date.
What could possibly go wrong?
While struggling to lay claim to the woman of the dreams he never had, Jackson is forced to deal with a grief-stricken Jillian trying to hold on to her past without letting go of her future—the doctor who took her heart and the Sergeant who gave her a new one.
Beyond the hope for light, lies the middle of darkness, the illusion of truth, and a haunting past.
*WARNING – Contains explicit language and sexual content and subject matter pertaining to physical/sexual abuse.

Jewel is a free-spirited romance junkie with a quirky sense of humor.
With 10 years of flossing lectures under her belt, she took early retirement from her dental hygiene career to stay home with her three awesome boys and manage the family business.
After her best friend of nearly 30 years suggested a few books from the Contemporary Romance genre, Jewel was hooked. Devouring two and three books a week but still craving more, she decided to practice sustainable reading, AKA writing.
When she’s not donning her cape and saving the planet one tree at a time, she enjoys yoga with friends, good food with family, rock climbing with her kids, watching How I Met Your Mother reruns, and of course…heart-wrenching, tear-jerking, panty-scorching novels.

Middle of Knight (Jack & Jill, #2)

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
End of Day introduced us to the issues and quirks of Jill. Middle of Knight gives us a way more in depth look of how she came to be who and where she is. Also, we get to go behind the curtain in Jack’s life.
I went from laughing out loud to going awww to tearing up. It really worked me over. I got wrapped up in the romance between Jessica & Luke, Jillian & A.J., and Ryn & Jackson. Each is beautiful and bittersweet in it’s own way.
Besides the natural wins and losses in life like love and death, there are also the things people do to each other happening. A little light is shown on the mysterious G.A.I.L. There are past and present times and several cast members included in this tale. Everyone brings his or her own stories into the overall plot.
The characters are so multidimensional and each is unlike any other role in any novel. They aren’t beauty queens, heartthrobs, bad boys (or girls), heroes, antiheroes or villains. Many of them are so eccentric and unexpected. You can never guess what cool thing they’re going to do or say next, but whatever it is, it’s always true and original to the person they are inside.
I cannot wait to see where this series goes in the next book.

“So, the usual?” Louis asks.

“Yeah.” Tank intervenes by knocking Louis’ arm away when he tries to hand me a menu.

I glare at the obnoxious arse. “I don’t get to decide what I want?”

“Nope.” He smirks, and it’s quite possibly the millionth one I’ve seen today. “I know exactly what you want. You just need to trust me.”

“Okay then,” Louis says. “Coffee?”

“Yes,” I practically shout. “The strongest you have.”

Tank shakes his head. “Get her a latté.”

I swear if looks could kill, Tank would be burnt to a char right about now. No one takes my coffee from me and lives to tell about it.

“Your system doesn’t need any more stimulation.”

“It’s caffeine, Tank, not cocaine,” I argue. “I’m pretty sure I’ll be okay.”

He shrugs, and Louis glances nervously between us again. He looks as though he wants to flee. Tank has that effect on a lot of people. Then again, it could be the fact that I just admitted to being a junkie and at any second he’s expecting me to break out my stash and start snorting lines off of his fancy table. Louis says, “Okay, so latté it is then.”

“No, I want—”

“I’m sorry, sweetheart, but your man is too scary to say no to.” He backs away from the table, shouting, “But don’t you worry, it’ll be the best latté you’ve ever tasted. You just sit tight.”

“He’s not my fucking man,” I shout back, drawing the attention of every patron in the room, which is really only two other people, not including Louis and Kerri. I look around sheepishly and then wrap my arms around myself, turning my attention back to Tank. “Stop fucking smirking, you arsehole, or I’m walking.”

“Try it and see how far you get, Warrior Princess.”

“I’m betting I’d at least get halfway down the street before you caught up to me.”

“You wanna test that theory?” He challenges with a grin, though his gaze warms me head to toe with its intensity. “My money says you’ll make it to the door before I drag you back to the table, put you over my fuckin’ knee and spank your arse ’til it’s red raw.”

I let out a deep, shaking breath and lick my lips. Jesus Christ do I want that. I want it so fucking bad. My nipples turn rock hard and Tank’s gaze drops to my black singlet. I’m suddenly hot, wet, and hyper aware of his lingering gaze. This man is going to be the death of me.

Tank (Savage Saints MC, #2)

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
4—4.5 stars
This is the love story between a club hitman and a club whore, and it’s a fairly dark tale full of pain in many forms including rape, drug addiction, incest, murder and major violence. Tank is about two broken people finding someone who can look past all of their faults and love the person underneath.
Both Tank and Ivy grew up with abuse beyond measure. The things they’ve seen and lived through are heartbreaking. Because of their experiences, both are able to see through the characteristics in each other which would cause society to put them in the useless or better off dead category.
Most of the storyline is deep and dark, requiring bravery to read, some parts bleeding over into horror, but going through this journey with the characters eventually leads to an uplifting feeling. If they can still get up in the morning, most of us should be able to conquer the world.
If you read book one, you know it wasn’t a light read. This was even heavier but better in my opinion.

BOSS by Ashley John Review

After years of travelling the world using his trust fund, college-dropout Joshua Silverton returns to London to discover two shocking truths; his estranged and wealthy father has been dead for over a year and he left his fortune to a total stranger. Joshua soon meets the man who stole his inheritance and even though he expects to hate Ezra Steele, he can’t ignore the strange attraction he suddenly feels towards him.
Bill Silverton saved Ezra Steele from his troubled past when he signed Silverton Tower over to him on his deathbed. Ezra now has the house, the business, the cars, the money and a different man in his bed every night. It’s a life he wants to cling to, so when Bill’s gorgeous son unexpectedly turns up and demands he hand everything back, his life is turned upside down in more ways than one.
A need to finally prove himself to his dead father forces Joshua to challenge Ezra but will he be able to ignore the attraction in order to be ruthless? Ezra tries to keep his enemies close by getting Joshua into his bed but as history catches up with him, he is forced to face himself. They are both running from their past, so in a battle between head and heart, Joshua and Ezra must choose what is more important – money or each other.

This is a story about two men who are lost. Both are running away from their pasts but not really running toward anything.
Joshua left town as soon as he was of age and has been traveling since. He has been living off of his trust fund and has never returned home. Years later, he finally returns to attend his cousin’s wedding to find that his father has died and left everything to Ezra, someone Joshua doesn’t even know. He goes from knowing he has an endless supply of money to learning he has no more coming. Life as he has known it is over. It’s time for Joshua to decide his future.
Ezra came from nothing to become one of the richest men in the city. He can buy anything he wants. Men throw themselves at him. Life is a party, but money can’t buy happiness.
Joshua and Ezra begin to see something in each other, but because of how they are connected, neither can trust the other. Also both men have outside forces (good and bad) chipping away their beliefs. The reader gets to see things from Joshua’s and Ezra’s point of view. There are several ups and downs and revelations over the course of the book. Great sexy times also work their way in.
Although there is a sequel, this is a complete story with no cliffhanger. If you’re one of those that likes to wait for the next to be released before starting a continuing storyline, you don’t have to worry about that with this novel.
BOSS has themes of serendipity, self-actualization, acceptance and growth. I really liked it and will look for more from this author.

Insidious By Aleatha Romig Review

Dark desires…Deadly secrets…Devious deceptions…Nothing is exactly as it seems in INSIDIOUS, the new erotic thriller from New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Aleatha Romig.

When a powerful man is willing to risk everything for his own satisfaction, only one woman can beat him at his own game: his wife. Or so she thinks…

“Let’s start with you calling me Stewart. Formalities seem unnecessary.”

Stewart Harrington is rich, gorgeous, and one of the most powerful men in Miami. He always gets what he wants. Anything is available to him for the right price.

Even me.

Being the wife of a mogul comes with all the perks, but being Mrs. Stewart Harrington comes with a few special requirements. I’ve learned to keep a part of myself locked away as my husband watches me submit to his needs. But the more he demands of me, the more beguiled he becomes and that’s to my advantage. So I keep fulfilling his fantasies and following his rules because he doesn’t know that what he’s playing is really my game. And winning is everything, right?

Insidious is a stand-alone novel and the first Tales from the Dark Side title. Due to the dark and explicit nature of this book, it is recommended for mature audiences only.

I began to turn toward him, to stop the uneasy feelings his proximity spurred, when he stopped me: his tenor left no room for compromise.
“Don’t turn around.”
Involuntarily, I shuddered at his command.
“Put your hands on the window. Let me see those pretty little fingers.”
I’d never heard a man speak with such unquestioning authority. Obediently, I splayed my fingers on the cool glass before me, thankful I’d left my purse on the sofa. Caging me within his arms, his hands came to rest beside mine. The contrast in size was startling as his deep voice exhaled breathily onto my neck.
His lips brushed my neck. Instead of fighting, I tilted my head back against his chest to give him better access.
Sighing, he moaned. “Damn, girl, you’re sexier up close than I ever imagined. Do you know how hot that answer was?” His fingers that had just painfully twisted my hard nub caressed my same breast. Suddenly, his touch was warm and electric. “You may be frightened, but it’s not of me, it’s of what you’re feeling. Your nipples are telling me you’re feeling the same thing I am. They’re saying that you like this.” With both hands on my breasts, he’d lowered the top of my dress fully exposing me to the window. Thankfully, we were stories above the city. “Do you know how else I know you’re aroused?”
Forming words had become increasingly difficult. Therefore, I shook my head.
“I smell it, and darling, you smell fantastic. I bet you taste fantastic.”
“Because, after I share my beautiful fiancée with the world, I’m going to bring you back here and bury my face in that perfect pussy. The next time you come, it won’t float in a tub. No, darling, it will cover my tongue, my lips, and my chin. I’ll be dripping with your sweet juices.”
Oh, my God!
“And you will not be sighing contently, as you just did. No, you will be calling out—screaming out—my name. Because as of today, that’s your job, to come, to show me how amazingly sexy you are. Because this little orgasm was nothing like what will overtake you when we get home.”
I was shocked and appalled at his candor, and, at the same time, I was freak’n turned on and hot as hell.

Insidious (Tales from the Dark Side, #1)

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
For anyone who hasn’t read Aleatha Romig before, here’s a helpful hint before you start. Anxiety Warning: Medication Required
If you have read her before, you already know that she’s the queen of mindfucking plots.
Insidious is about a girl thrown into a world she knows nothing about. She is young and naive and has no idea what her future holds. She continuously finds herself in situations of ‘you can’t close it once it’s been opened.’ This leads to sink or swim time, and she’s not going down without a fight. Nothing is ever really what it appears to be, including her.
Erotic scenes play a huge part. Some are dark; some are business; some are pleasure. Scandals are lurking behind each act. Every character has their own agenda. Contracts control some. Murders end some. It’s the type of book that you have to pay attention to what you’re reading. Certain parts may even require a reread in order to digest this pretzel of a storyline. It’s difficult for me to explain the levels of twists and turns without giving away too much, and I recommend going into it without knowing anything beforehand. Just understand that the moral for every character in the book is trust no one.
