An Exaltation of Larks by Suanne Laqueur Review

September 11, 1973: Eleven-year-old Alejandro Penda watches from his apartment window as Santiago, Chile falls to a military coup, destroying his family and his childhood. Arriving alone in America, he’s taken in by the Larks: a prominent family in the town of Guelisten. Though burdened by unresolved grief for his disappeared parents, he becomes fiercely loyal to the Larks, eventually marrying one of their daughters, Valerie.

September 11, 2001: Javier Landes watches from his apartment window as New York City falls to terrorism. As one of Manhattan’s top-paid male escorts, this professional lover has never lacked for company and is loyal only to himself. But in the wake of 9/11, Jav is named guardian for an orphaned nephew in Guelisten and must open his carefully-guarded heart to pain he’s long suppressed.

Alex, Valerie and Jav meet first in their twenties, with a sudden attraction each finds strange and compelling. When they meet again in their forties, they discover not only is their bond still strong, but their life experiences are strangely similar. All have been shaped by separate 9/11’s, and their unfinished business from the past will change everything they know about love, loyalty and friendship.

“Life has rules. You cannot come in the middle of the night and take what we agreed isn’t yours.”

Across three decades and two continents, Suanne Laqueur’s fifth novel explores the unpredictability of sexual attraction, how family ties are forged, torn and mended, and how love’s downfall can turn to exaltation.

An Exaltation of Larks

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I am so thankful that this book was brought to my attention. It is definitely my favorite read of 2016 and the best I’ve read in a long time (that’s saying something because I read a lot). I loved everything about it. I had many smiles and tears along the way. My heart squeezed and soared.
The story follows main characters and the people in their lives for several decades, from childhood to middle age. It’s a tale of connected families. Death, love, tragedy, war, hope, lust, friendship, parenthood, PTSD, prejudice, pain, culture, family, loss, happiness, sexuality, marriage…basically every human emotion and state of being are covered. The story is told from several points of view, two being an American refugee from Chile who lost most of his family and a Dominican American who was disowned by his family. The cast is from all walks of life, ages, races, etc. The storyline was completely original for me. It’s a novel about living and all the ups and downs and snapshot moments and bigger pictures. Issues don’t always tie up neatly or quickly. Just like reality sometimes the tone is heartbreaking, bittersweet, beautiful or magnificent.
I’m still so deep in the feels that I can’t get it out of my head. This author truly has a gift. There are a lot of good books out there, but finding something that touches me on this level is a rare unicorn. Bravo!

FAITHFUL by Alice Hoffman Review

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Marriage of Opposites and The Dovekeepers comes a soul-searching story about a young woman struggling to redefine herself and the power of love, family, and fate.

Growing up on Long Island, Shelby Richmond is an ordinary girl until one night an extraordinary tragedy changes her fate. Her best friend’s future is destroyed in an accident, while Shelby walks away with the burden of guilt.

What happens when a life is turned inside out? When love is something so distant it may as well be a star in the sky? Faithful is the story of a survivor, filled with emotion—from dark suffering to true happiness—a moving portrait of a young woman finding her way in the modern world. A fan of Chinese food, dogs, bookstores, and men she should stay away from, Shelby has to fight her way back to her own future. In New York City she finds a circle of lost and found souls—including an angel who’s been watching over her ever since that fateful icy night.

Here is a character you will fall in love with, so believable and real and endearing, that she captures both the ache of loneliness and the joy of finding yourself at last. For anyone who’s ever been a hurt teenager, for every mother of a daughter who has lost her way, Faithful is a roadmap.

Alice Hoffman’s “trademark alchemy” (USA TODAY) and her ability to write about the “delicate balance between the everyday world and the extraordinary” (WBUR) make this an unforgettable story. With beautifully crafted prose, Alice Hoffman spins hope from heartbreak in this profoundly moving novel.

Faithful

4.5 stars
This is a great story for mature teens and adults in my opinion. The main character goes through bits of those stages of her life during this book. It highlights how some things and people will affect you forever and how some things and people will not remain the focus of your life. It shows how a person can change everything around and how pain and joy come and go. The lead is in a tragic accident, which stops her from moving forward. After trying to end it, she has to reset her life. She slowly heals and finds her path. Really, it’s hard to sum up this story because I can’t explain the depth of life that takes place within its words. I definitely recommend this book.

Blueberry Boys by Vanessa North Blog Tour Review

Hello! I’m Vanessa North—welcome to the Blueberry Boys blog tour! At various tour stops, I’ll be sharing character interviews, blueberry recipes, a confession about a certain guilty pleasure that partly inspired this story, and more. Comment on each stop to be entered in a drawing for a $30 Amazon gift card. Thanks for joining me on the tour!

About the Book

Connor Graham is a city boy—a celebrated fashion photographer in New York. When his uncle’s death drags him back to the family blueberry farm, all he wants to do is sell it as quickly as he can. Until he meets his uncle’s tenant farmer.

Jed Jones, shy and stammering, devout and dedicated, has always yearned for land of his own and a man to share it with. Kept in the closet by his church, family, and disastrous first love, he longs to be accepted for who he is. But now, with his farm and his future in Connor’s careless hands, he stands to lose even the little he has.

Neither man expects the connection between them. Jed sees Connor—appreciates his art and passion like no one else in this godforsaken town ever has. Connor hears Jed—looks past his stutter to listen to the man inside. The time they share is idyllic, but with the farm sale pending, even their sanctuary is a source of tension. As work, family, and their town’s old-fashioned attitudes pull them apart, they must find a way to reconcile commitments to their careers and to each other.

About the Author

Author of over a dozen novels, novellas, and short stories, Vanessa North delights in giving happy-ever-afters to characters who don’t think they deserve them. Relentless curiosity led her to take up knitting and run a few marathons “just to see if she could.” She started writing for the same reason. Her very patient husband pretends not to notice when her hobbies take over the house. Living and writing in Northwest Georgia, she finds her attempts to keep a quiet home are frequently thwarted by twin boy-children and a very, very large dog.

REVIEW

Blueberry Boys

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Connor is back to visit his hometown for the first time in several years. Growing up without much support in the way of family in a town where being gay wasn’t largely accepted led to him moving to the city and never looking back. He’s only returning now to attend his uncle’s funeral and determine what to do with the land inheritance.
Jed comes from a big religious family. Unlike Connor, Jed is not open about being gay. He’s afraid to let anyone know because if it affected his reputation negatively, in a small town the impact could be detrimental. Jed already has the added pressure of stuttering and running a farm, which isn’t a secure job.
As Connor and Jed spend time together getting to know each other, they see things differently and are inspired to make changes in their own lives. I’m not a fan of a lot of ridiculous drama so I super appreciate the realness of this story. Yes, there are issues for the characters to overcome. Everything isn’t perfect in their world, but it happens realistically.
Blueberry Boys is easy to follow and understand. It’s sweet, sexy, thoughtful and romantic. After reading it, I had a satisfied, uplifted, happy feeling. I recommend it those looking for a subtle story of life and love.

Slippery When Wet

Slowly, I draw up to his side at the railing. Strategically, I make sure to come quite close to him, close enough for our elbows to kiss. Even through the fabric of my shirt and his blazer, there is electricity in our every touch. I hope he feels it too. This can’t all just be in my little lonely, hungry head.
“The stars look like … dust,” he murmurs in awe. “So many of them.”
His mouth doesn’t need to be by my ear. Just his little words send a message through the network of my body, from my ear, down the cable of my neck, sending an email alert down my spine, jiggling me everywhere in my belly, then wrestling its way down my thighs and converting my knees into noodles. How does he do that?
I turn my face and study the side of his as he stares into the endless black unknown. The crashing sound of waves as the cruise ship cuts through the gulf is all we hear. I’m with him. He’s with me. No one is around. We’re alone.
We’re alone.
I stare and I stare at him. I want to kiss him. I keep daring myself to do it. Do it. Do it.
Let go.

Daryl Banner is a writer and composer who graduated from the University of Houston with a degree in Theatre and Psychology.

He does not write in any single genre, as his stories tend to span several. He is most inspired by the smart and unlikely hero, but urges you (the reader) not to fall in love with them; they may deceive you with their innocence. He is thrilled by putting his characters in terrible situations where they must face choices and challenges that seem impossible to overcome.

Daryl Banner writes contemporary fiction, sci-fi/fantasy (both in medieval and futuristic senses), unique takes on the apocalypse and paranormal romance genre, as well as magic realism. He cannot wait to hear what you think about his stories and welcomes (and responds to!) all feedback.

Interesting tidbits: Daryl is also an obsessive piano player, video game enthusiast, and occasional actor. He’s been remixing video game music for over fifteen years, and is a passionate Final Fantasy fan. Slippery When Wet (The Brazen Boys, #8)

It’s very difficult for Scott to unwind. He’s making plans to actually do it (proving just how much he really can’t) on this vacation. Things keep happing the wrong way from how he wants them to go except for continual run ins with a certain sexy passenger. After actually meeting Hendry, life begins to flow by much easier. Never having let go before, Scott has to find the happy medium between uptight and going overboard.
This author’s stories seem to always have a little message to me. This one seemed to say you have to lighten up before you crack up. And of course it’s full of his unique fun and flavorful wording.
As far as I know, Slippery When Wet is the last of the Brazen Boys series. I liked them all, but I have to give a shoutout to my favorite. If you haven’t read Straight Up, it’s a must.

TWICE THE HANDS TO HOLD by Louis Stevens Review

Twin brothers Brian and Matt Walker went to live with their mother’s brother after the death of their parents at an early age. Brian is still wracked with the guilt he carries around from a young age and sees the world through a distorted lens of self-loathing. When he meets a sexy and interested college-aged guy at the beginning of his senior year of high school, he may have finally found someone who can help him escape his mundane existence.

Matt has his life all planned out — he longs for a solid career in journalism after graduating college. But his tenuous hold on family life threatens his dreams of independence, as does the attentions of a closeted new transfer to their school.

Can Matt pull away enough from his family to come into his own? And will Brian finally get to grips with his past and allow his twin to chase his own happiness?

Excerpt:

“I didn’t drink tonight, Matt!”
“That’s not what I asked,” Matt bellowed.
Brian tried to eclipse his brother in the hallway and backed him against the wall, encasing his head between his arms. “Back the hell off, Matt. Why do you always have to get in my face at the worst time?”
“Because you’re my goddamn brother and I love you. You’re better than—”
Brian closed the distance between them and pressed his lips hard against Matt’s. The intensity between them sucked the air out of the hallway and closed the walls in on him. There was no one else but them right then and the world didn’t exist. It was just him and his brother, the way it always had been.
Brian pushed his lucked and opened his mouth, sliding his tongue across his brother’s bottom lip, but Matt pulled away.
“Bri, don’t.”
“Shh.”
Matt breathed heavily, but kept his eyes closed. “Uncle Jake…”
Brian pulled back a bit, studying his brother’s features.
Matt arched his neck, lifting his face up mere inches as though missing the contact. Matt’s chest heaved, his breathing getting heavier, and the vein in his neck started a rhythmic pounding. Brian smiled satisfyingly. No rich kid could pull this reaction out of his brother. He tucked a stray piece of silk behind Matt’s ear, then touched the tips of their noses together. “It’s alright, I’m just taking back what’s mine. What’s always been mine.” He touched his mouth against Matt’s softly.
Matt’s throat clicked from a dry swallow and spoke against his lips. “James…”
At that Brian pulled away abruptly. His fist connected to the wall next to Matt’s ear. Now he couldn’t even look at his brother. Just the thought of that guy’s hands roaming over him, feeling him, discovering Matt, ate away at him. The whiff of expensive cologne hung around Matt and the repugnant odor made him sick. It was too much. His brother was slipping through his fingers and there was nothing he could do to stop it. It pissed him off, because he cared more than he should. He pulled back as Matt winced from the impact near his head.
“I’m sorry,” he said immediately. Matt didn’t look up at him, the quiet deafening around them. “Sorry,” he said again.

REVIEW

Twice the Hands to Hold

Twice the Hands to Hold covers a multitude of areas such as overcoming past pain, emotional growth, romance and family relationships. It’s told in third person and follows the lives of a set of twin teen boys nearing high school graduation and their uncle who adopted them as young children after the death of their parents.
Matt is openly gay and sure of his position in life. He’s caring and concerned for those around him. He’s the more sweet and friendly twin. He is also the one who doesn’t get into trouble for the most part.
Brian is bi. Outwardly, he appears to be confident and in control. He’s smart and athletic, above the norm in many areas. Inside, he’s plagued with pains of guilt and insecurity. Brian’s internal struggles cause him to make bad choices and get into trouble.
I found this to be a slice-of-life sweet tale of growing up. The twins, especially Brian, have tremendous ups and downs, but there are bits in the story to which everyone can identify. This is the perfect book for M/M readers wanting an intimate look inside the lives of a couple of almost men learning to let go of boyhood.

UNTAMED by S.C. Stephens Review

#1 New York Times bestselling author S.C. Stephens brings us the next book in her Thoughtless series!

The spotlight doesn’t only shine. Sometimes it burns.

Being the bad-boy bassist for the world’s hottest band has earned Griffin Hancock some perks: a big house, a fast car, and most importantly his incredible wife, Anna. The one thing it hasn’t brought him is the spotlight. Anna tells him to be patient, that his talent will win out. But Griffin is through waiting for permission to shine.

Without warning, Griffin makes a shocking decision and takes the gamble of a lifetime. Suddenly he’s caught up in a new level of lights, cameras, and chaos. One that pushes his relationship with Anna to its limits. Anna has always found his unpredictable behavior sexy, but lately he’s seen an ache in her eyes–and it has his soul in knots. Just as the recognition Griffin seeks is finally within reach, the thing he loves most in life could be slipping through his fingers…

REVIEW

Untamed (Thoughtless, #4)

4.5 stars
This book floored me. I don’t know what I was expecting, but what I got surprised me. Untamed is a story of personal growth and redemption.
Everything is told from the mind Griffin, which can be a totally crazy and scary place sometimes. For me the story went through stages. The beginning is hilarious. I knew Grif would be funny, but I literally could not keep from laughing out loud. Then he became obsessed with having a bigger part in the band. I felt sorry for him when he was constantly turned down. Kellan’s shadow is a dark place sometimes. That morphed into a spotlight on his total self-absorption. What is apparent to the reader, isn’t so easy for him to see. This leads to him eating crow in a big way.
I stayed up most the night reading Untamed. I groaned at some of the antics Griffin pulled. I became so nervous at times when it seemed everything was falling apart. I even cried several tears.
Before this book, I only thought of Grif as the joker. It takes awhile, but seeing a different side of him is wonderful. I never thought about Anna so much before Untamed. She’s an amazing character and perfect for him. They’re excellent at keeping the sexy spark alive. All of the band members and families add to the depth, and I liked seeing more from everyone.

When Benny goes on a date with the town’s “sure thing” girl, his night is wrecked by the ever-flamboyant Charlie, who doesn’t seem to buy that Benny is just another straight boy. Love, longing, and secrets torment Benny, and when a night of drunken partying goes too far, his crush on Trent might become more than just a fantasy …

It’s finally going to happen.
He tells me he wants to have his way with me, his eyes greedy and black, all his dark hair tousled from our bout of wrestling on the floor where he almost tore my sleeve. Not that it matters, as I suspect my clothes won’t be on for much longer at this rate.
I tell him I’ve always been his to do with as he pleases. He laughs in my face and, just when I think he’s going to kiss me, he reaches down, slips his hand into my jeans and grabs a mighty handful of my manhood. I gasp, my lips parting, and an evil look of triumph takes his face.
This is mine, he tells me in a word or two. This is mine until I’m done with you, Benny. You got that? Your cock belongs to me.
Between stolen breaths, I tell him to do whatever he wants with it. My roommate of two years and best buddy of seven, I tell Trent I’m so fucking horny for him I feel sick.
Or maybe it’s his vice grip on my balls that’s inspiring the nausea. You’re goddamned right, he whispers, then clasps my hair into his other hand and pulls my head back onto the couch. One hand gripping my junk, the other my hair, I’m in his complete control.
Just where I’ve always wanted to be for years.

You can feed your ears with many of his remixes (as well as his original music) on his YouTube page “www.youtube.com/DarylBanner”. Also, he personally answers all emails he receives, so if you have some strange desire to write him, he may enjoy it. He currently resides in Texas.

Straight Up (The Brazen Boys, #6)

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
4.75 stars
This installment was the most relatable of the entire series for me. I’ve never been in Benny’s position, but I’ve felt lost, questioned myself, made a mistake and embarrassed myself. I ‘got’ Benny. Like Bastian reading The Neverending Story, I was there when he was disheartened by his prospects at the party. I shadowed him nervously on the couch. I sat with tears in my eyes (yes, literally, I cried) when the shit hit the fan. I also enjoyed Charlie who is a total riot. I even have a spot for Trent. Basically, I had tons of feels, formed an emotional attachment, laughed and cried.
As hard as it is, I’m not going to give away anymore of the plot. I believe the message is that this is your actual life, not a test, so don’t waste you’re time. Go find yourself. I believe it also has a secondary moral that you have to face reality at some point.
