MAX by Bey Deckard Review

Novella (49,000 words)
Genre(s): transgressive, psychopath, dark erotica, QUILTBAG

Fresh out of school, Dr. Crane takes on a new patient who both intrigues and unnerves him. Charming, manipulative, and amoral, Max has exactly the sort of mind Crane finds himself drawn to with fictional characters.

As Max weaves himself into Crane’s life, Crane realizes that while fiction might be safe, Max certainly is not.

When the professional line between them thins, who gets to define where one man ends and the other begins?

Max

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Dr. Crane is well-versed on mental health, but all warning signs are ignored when it comes to Max. There’s no denying how intriguing Max is. Crane falls head first into the deranged unknown. Because the storyline is intelligent and amoral, it’s never clear what will happen next. The insanity feels catchy. There are patches of disorientation so heavy the reader can’t be certain who did what.
This is definitely my kind of story. It has dark themes but isn’t overly graphic. I had completely no idea what the end game was. I actually loved the ending. I thought it was a little romantic in a twisted psychopath way, but I’m not sure if that was the intention of the author. If you like characters who don’t quite fit any of society’s molds, going a bit past deviant, this is probably a book for you.

EXCERPT

Sara

Shrill screams echoed throughout our dimly lit bedroom, accelerating my heartbeat and pulling me from the terrible nightmare. I waited for more, until the realization struck. The screams were my own.

“Jacob?” I called, my voice shaking with dread as I reached for my husband. Instead of reassurance, my fingers met cold empty sheets. He was gone—still away at another campus.

What just happened? Was it a dream?

I clung to the covers as I puffed my cheeks and slowly exhaled. While each breath helped to still the chaos, the exercise wasn’t enough.

Who am I? Who is he?

Jacob’s questions from months ago came back. They were my security. They’d worked before.

I am Sara Adams and my husband is Jacob Adams.

Pushing the images from my dream, or nightmare, away, I imagined Jacob’s comforting embrace. Slowly I threw back the down comforter and willed the cool air to soothe my perspiration-drenched skin. From the way my heart galloped in my chest, I might have been running a marathon, not sleeping.

In my sleep I’d been battling to escape a vehicle, and then an explosion of heat.

It had been a dream, I reassured myself—a nightmare. The accident I’d had, nearly nine months before, had been different. I couldn’t remember it, but I’d been told that I’d been injured and gone unconscious. In the nightmare I had been out and away from the wreckage.

I shook my head.

It seemed so real.

In my dream I hadn’t been able to see past the darkness, yet I’d known I wasn’t injured.

My arms surrounded my midsection as the memories replayed like pictures in my mind. Someone was hurting me—purposely harming me, and there was a voice—a deep voice.

Jacob’s voice?

No. He wouldn’t hurt me.

My entire body shuddered as goose bumps peppered my skin. Sitting upright, I reached for the bedside lamp. With trembling fingers I turned the knob and my eyes adjusted as the soft light combined with the sun’s perpetual summer glow.

I closed my eyes and tried to concentrate on Jacob’s questions.

Who am I? Who is he?

This time I said the words aloud, praying that if I spoke the truth, the images would disappear. “I am Sara Adams. He is my husband, Jacob Adams.” I pulled myself from the bed and walked to the bathroom. Turning on the light and the faucet, I cupped the cool water and splashed my face. As I reached for the cup and began to fill it, a metaphoric dam that had been constructed to hold back my past burst.

My mind was flooded—no longer with simple images, but with scene after scene.

For the first time since I could recall, I knew the woman in the mirror.

I knew me.
Into the Light
INTO THE LIGHT (THE LIGHT #1)

An investigator’s search for a friend draws her into a world darker than she could have imagined.

Sara Adams awakes blind, unable to remember the most basic details of her life, but her darkness seems a blessing when she discovers the terrors of The Light.

Stella Montgomery investigates the news on the mean streets of Detroit, where she’s noticed a disturbing trend: young women are vanishing. When her best friend disappears, Stella investigates—despite warnings from her police detective boyfriend—following a twisted trail that leads her through the city’s most dangerous and forsaken precincts. There she uncovers something more sinister than she could have imagined: a shadowy organization known as The Light, led by the enigmatic Father Gabriel.

As Sara struggles to understand her place in the strange world she’s awakened to—an oppressive cult demanding unquestioning obedience—and her feelings for Jacob, the husband she can’t recall and whose harsh and tender attentions confuse and beguile her, Stella risks all to discover the truth. But enlightenment always comes with a price…

REVIEW

Away from the Dark (The Light, #2)

4.5 stars
I think this author is trying to kill me slowly. No one can keep me on the edge like she does. You can never take for granted the direction the storyline will go in her novels.
I devoured Into the Light and have been dying for Away from the Dark since the moment I finished ITL. AFTD dives straight into the thick of the struggle. The reader knows things that the characters do not, and even so, you still don’t know the solutions. You’re just waiting for the rug to be pulled out, for the explosion to happen. I grew to love Sara and Jacob. Their strength and bravery are admirable. Their relationship is made to weather a storm, but they confront wave after wave. So many times I held my breath hoping they would get through a situation or make the right decision. When they came to a crossroads, I flailed about with uncertainty. It’s great writing when an author can make a person worry more for characters in a story than real life. This author has a gift for it.
I recommend this book (series actually because book one has to be read first) to anyone who enjoys psychological thrillers and mysteries. I also suggest having a strong drink handy and maybe one of those squishy stress balls for the really intense scenes.

Midnight Lily by Mia Sheridan Review

Holden Scott is the prince of professional football. At least he was before he lost it all . . . or more to the point, before he threw it all away. Now he’s out of a job, out of the public’s good graces, and perhaps just a little out of his mind. So when a friend offers up his remote lodge in the wilds of Colorado, giving Holden some time away to get his life back on track, he can hardly say no. The last thing he expects is to see a beautiful girl in the woods—one wearing a white, lace dress who appears in the moonlight, and leaves no footprints behind. Is she a dream? A ghost? A product of his muddled imagination? Or something entirely different?
Midnight Lily is the haunting love story of two lost souls reaching for each other in the dark. A tale of healing, acceptance, and the worlds we create to protect our own hearts. It is a story of being lost, of being found, and of being in the place between.
THIS IS A STAND-ALONE SIGN OF LOVE NOVEL, INSPIRED BY VIRGO. Non-Paranormal, New Adult Contemporary Romance: Due to strong language and sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

REVIEW

Midnight Lily

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
YOU MUST GO INTO THIS STORY BLIND!  If you see spoilers, do not read them because it will ruin the book for you.  My second piece of advice is to pay really close attention to everything. Even when you get to the end, you will have to go back and reread some parts.  Midnight Lily is not PNR, but expect some Wonderland-y feelings.
I do suggest buddy reading so you can help each other discuss and understand.
Just remember that at its core, this is a romance.
After you dissect and digest, you will discover that Midnight Lily is actually an epic romance.

Blurb

I’m that girl…
The girl every woman loves to hate.
The one your man dreams about.
I live up to my name…
CLUBWHORE.
And this is my story.
She needs something. Something Devil’s Renegade MC Sergeant at Arms Bryce is more than willing to give. But he’s not the kind of man who asks. He takes. And soon, he will take her. He’ll dominate her. He’ll captivate her. She’ll be his—no patches…no property…no titles.
Only her. Only him.
She thinks this is her story to tell.
It very well may be.
But he…is fixing to rewrite it.

REVIEW

Clubwhore (Devil's Renegade MC, #1)

Delilah gets free room and board plus a set amount in cash each week to be available to the lonely men of the club. She bartends, cooks and attends to sexual needs. From the title, I was expecting total raunchiness and debauchery to be the ruling elements, but I soon found out that she’s a real asset to the club. They genuinely like her, including the old ladies.
Delilah has her issues. She tends to hurt and sabotage herself on the down low while maintaining an in control appearance in front of her MC family. Of course she isn’t fooling everyone, and some want to help her, including the big and scary-looking Bryce. He identifies her demons immediately.
I love the attitudes and dialogue between the characters. They’re sexy, sassy, serious, playful, the whole range really. I like them not being too caught up in the badass MC mindset behavior. I also like that even though this book is sexual, it isn’t hung up over the sex. There’s major story going on around all the sex. Clubwhore has hints of BDSM, but it isn’t an actual BDSM story. I loved it, and I’ll definitely be looking for more from this author.

Stain by Francette Phal Release Day Review

12235349_499090706919148_493617791_o

Synopsis

“You’re like the sun…and I’m the stupid moon. Always chasing after you.”

I didn’t know it was possible to fall so deeply into someone. To drown so strongly into their bottomless depths coming up for air was unfathomable. Until he comes along, with his sun-hot radiance, and eclipses the candle that is me. He’s Lucifer before the fall, beautiful but the devil is in the way he looks at me. In the way his touch brands his name across every inch of my skin. His kisses possess my soul in the most sinful of ways.

Maddox Moore is my beginning and my end. Protector, friend, and lover—he’s become my sole religion. At his side I become fearless, in his arms I burn to cinders, and in worshiping him I lose myself and discover the person he sees in me. But nothing is forever. Moments are ephemeral. No matter how much you want something life inevitably reminds you that you can’t have it.

I’m damaged. He’s broken. We’re both covered in stains. Stains that make it impossible for us to hold onto each other.

REVIEW

Stain

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Maddox and Aylee are orphans, almost adults and victims of physical and sexual abuse. Before even knowing the other’s story, they’re drawn to one another. Dealing drugs, delivering violence and working the sex industry are how he stays ahead of his demons. She cuts herself and tries to disappear. Outwardly, he’s a gangbanger and she’s a good girl. No one knows what they really are inside.
Stain is a dark story, but in its way, the courtship between Maddox and Aylee is sweet. Seeing two damaged people, who previously seem dead inside, open up and fall in love is a beautiful thing. Of course, in the life they’ve been given, romance isn’t really an attainable quality.
This author has a talent for making anti-heroes that you can’t help but love. Maddox isn’t as bad on the evil scale as some, but he isn’t exactly a good guy either. He has major anger issues and has no need for people except to use them. This isn’t the darkest book ever, but just a warning; it does have rape and murder themes. If your reading tastes lean this direction, you should definitely check it out.

NOW AVAILABLE!

the fall up cover ebook.jpg

I wanted to jump.
He made me fall.

As a celebrity, I lived in the public eye, but somewhere along the way, I’d lost myself in the spotlight.

Until he found me.

Sam Rivers was a gorgeous, tattooed stranger who saved my life with nothing more than a simple conversation.

But we were both standing on that bridge for a reason the night we met. The secrets of our pasts brought us together—and then tore us apart.

Could we find a reason to hold on as life constantly pulled us down?

Or maybe there’s only one direction to go when two people fall in love at rock bottom—up.

the fall up teaser 3.jpg

Excerpt One
“Thank fuck!” Sam said, swinging the door open before Devon even had the car in park.
“Oh, this isn’t my place. We’re just dropping Devon off. I’m about twenty minutes across town?”  I tossed him a sugary smile then boldly shifted my hand into his lap, purposely brushing the bulge under his denim.
Grabbing my wrist, he narrowed his eyes and called out, “Devon, I’m gonna need to borrow a bedroom.”
I burst out laughing as Devon cursed loudly.
“Fine. This is my place. No smoking inside though,” I snipped as I climbed from the SUV.
“You better have some seriously exciting extracurricular activities to keep me distracted, then.”
“I have Ping-Pong!”
“Not exactly what I was thinking.” He mischievously cocked his head. “But I guess paddles and balls are as good a start as any.” Dipping down, he hoisted me over his shoulder. “Point me to the Ping-Pong table, my lady.”
I didn’t. I laughed hysterically as he carried me inside. Then I directed him to my bedroom instead.
I heard Devon locking up the house as Sam deposited me on the bed.
“Jesus. This view.”  He pushed the curtains back. “Why the hell would you ever go up to the bridge when you have this here?”
“I don’t know,” I answered, pulling my earrings off and placing them on my nightstand.
Oh, but I knew. It might not have been what had originally sent me up that bridge, but it was why my feet carried me back every night. And that very reason was currently standing in front of me with entirely too much clothing on.
“You want a beer?” I asked, sliding my shoes off.
“Nah, I’m good.” He faced me, and I could tell something was off with his demeanor. He didn’t inch any closer. Instead, his lips were tight and his eyes uncomfortably flashed around the room.
It suddenly didn’t feel like Sam standing in front of me at all.
He felt like a stranger who had just come face-to-face with Levee Williams.
Damn it.
“Why are you looking at me like that? Are you about to freak out?” I whispered, nervously moistening my lips.
He shoved his hands into his pockets. “I’m not really sure yet. But I’m gonna need you to stop licking your lips long enough for me to figure it out.” His mouth cracked into a wide grin, and my shoulders relaxed.
Now that was a flash of my Sam.
“Want to tell me what’s going on?” I asked.
“It’s just… I think this is the first time I’ve realized that you’re some big-time celebrity. I might be in over my head here, Designer Shoes.”
“I just make music, Sam.” I returned his smile and very slowly prowled in his direction. “Imagine how I feel though. You’re Samuel Nathan Rivers. A tough, tattooed furniture designer who makes six figures a year but is too afraid to tell his mommy he votes democratic.” I giggled as he frowned humorously. Stopping in front of him, I dragged a fingernail down his chest then teased the waistband of his jeans. “Have you considered that maybe I’m the one who’s in over her head here?” I leaned forward to nip at his lips, but he spun us around.
“Excellent point. I’m going to need you to try really hard to keep it together, Levee. You haven’t even seen my six-pack and huge cock, yet.” He smirked and attempted to return my nip, but I stepped out of his reach.
“You brought beer and chicken?” I feigned excitement.
That one corny joke was all it took to bring my Sam back completely.
With a sexy smile and a coy shrug, he seductively backed me toward the bed. “What can I say? I like to be prepared.”
“Clearly,” I breathed.
He moved in close so his lips were only a centimeter away, but for as much as I wanted him, it was agonizing. “Clearly,” he repeated, his smoky yet sweet breath breezing across my mouth.
His strong arm looped around my waist, tugging me against his chest, while I stared into his hooded eyes, eagerly waiting for him to make a move.
Any move.
Every move.
the fall up teaser use.jpg

Excerpt Two
“You’re overdoing it, Lev. I know this job isn’t exactly nine-to-five, but it’s not twenty-four-seven, either. You have to stop being Levee Williams all the time and just be you.”
“I know,” I responded.
I didn’t though. I felt like a robot parading around in a lost woman’s body.
Smile.
Pose.
Turn.
Toss in the occasional song.
Repeat.
What little time I did manage to carve out for myself was spent at various children’s hospitals across the country.
Smile.
Pose.
Turn.
Watch a child die.
Repeat.
With every day that passed, the smile became less and less genuine, the pose more and more forced, and the turn took me further and further away from who I really was.
My career was soaring while, personally, I was plummeting. Every single day felt like a terrifying free fall in no particular direction. I was stuck in the middle with no way up—or down.
“You remember that girl, right?” Henry asked, tucking a hair behind my ear.
I nodded.
I did remember her. She was fun and carefree. She loved going out and dancing at nightclubs until the very last song played. She slept until noon if she could. Then, fueled by coffee alone, she’d spend the day with a guitar strapped around her neck and a notepad at her side. She had a huge heart, but she knew her limitations.
Oh, I remembered that girl. I just couldn’t figure out how to get back to her.

The Fall Up

This couple had a very unique meeting, romantic and mysterious. They’re also quite good with the humorous banter. Sam is a business owner who remakes old furniture and such into one of a kind new pieces of furniture. Levee is a super popular pop singer. Both have been touched with mental illness and death. This is their story of how they help each other to heal.
I really enjoyed their best friends. Sam’s bud Ryan is a lawyer in love with his secretary, and he is forever worried about another guy catching her eye. Levee’s bestie Henry is a singer. They sometimes work together. He’s gay and totally man crazy.
If you’re looking for instalove or something that’s sweet and fun, The Fall Up is something you should check out.

RIP by Rachel Van Dyken Blog Tour Review

RIP Release Day – October 20, 2015

BLURB:
Pretty things aren’t meant to be broken.
But I broke her, and now we both have to pay the price.
I’m her nightmare.
I’m her savior.
And now that I have her signature on an ironclad contract, I own her body and soul.
She doesn’t remember me.
She will.
It’s inevitable.
Because as much as I know I need to stay away, for fear of unlocking the memories I helped her father bury–I can’t.
She was the apple in the Garden, dangled in front of me, her core so tempting and sweet. A voice whispered. Just. One. Bite.
I bit.
I tasted.
I fell.
Welcome to the world of the Russian mafia, where death, is your only future.

EXCERPT

“You are your father’s daughter.” His lips curved into a delicious smile, “You resemble each other, not in looks, but definitely in attitude.” His gaze was unapologetic as he tilted his head and started raking his eyes from my feet up my legs until finally settling on my face. I clenched my legs together tightly and forced a smile.

“If you don’t mind, Mr. Blazik, I’d really like to get on with the interview, I know your time is precious.”
As was mine, I wanted to stress, but didn’t, just barely restraining myself and clenching my teeth to keep from giving him a much-needed verbal lashing.
“I blocked out my entire day.”
Did he want applause? “Right, well, I assure you I can be fast.”
His dark laugh had me shivering and wanting to lean forward all at once. Men that good looking shouldn’t be blessed with chuckles like that—a freaking sirens call that’s what it was.
“Amazing… You truly don’t know why you’re here, do you?”
How many times did I need to repeat myself and why was I getting the sudden impression that the guy was on some seriously hard drugs? I looked closer; didn’t pinpoint pupils mean he was high or something?
“I assure you I’m not drunk, nor high, if that’s what you’re thinking.” He chuckled again and rubbed his hands together. “Though the idea does have merit, all things considering.” A muscle clenched in his jaw.
Oh good, so he was a doctor who liked drugs and had more money than God. That should go over well for addiction problems.
I scooted back against the leather and clicked my pen for, oh, I don’t know, the tenth time. “If you aren’t going to answer my questions, I should probably go.”
“You won’t be going anywhere,” he said in a quiet voice. “And for that I’m truly sorry.” His eyes met mine, and they seemed… apologetic.
“Pardon?” Was he threatening me? Warning bells went off in my head as adrenaline shot through my system.
“Your father…” He tilted his head. “He owes me a debt… of gratitude… I asked for something irreplaceable, something that’s been owed to me for a very long time.”
My stomach sank as my heart started hammering against my chest.
“What exactly did my father give you?” I choked out, hating that I probably knew the answer, because my father was ruthless, he was a business man after all, and he never backed out of a deal. It was business over family and our business was darkness itself, horrible, something I blocked out because it made me feel better when I woke up in the morning and fell asleep at night.
“Well…” Mr. Blazik stood. “I thought that would be obvious.”  He turned his back to me and walked over to his desk then pressed a button causing blinds to creep down all the windows. When he turned, the room was already starting to blanket in darkness, making it so that his teeth practically glowed. “He gave me you.”

REVIEW

Rip

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
RIP is a little darker than RVD’s usual mafia reads. The Italian mafioso characters we’ve all grown to love are in it and do bring their signature brand of humor and play, but most of this story is about the mysterious, dangerous and sometimes horrific inner workings of the Russian mob.
Everything has always felt a little off in Maya’s life. She can’t quite figure out what it is that nags at her. She knows her father is a bad man and high up Russian mobster, and she is determined to focus on her schooling and future.
Nikolai’s whole life is secrets and cover ups, smoke and mirrors. Under everything is a very capable, deadly genius juggling too many balls. Something is bound to drop at some point. His goal is to be in the best position when that happens.
Maya and Nikolai are forever connected. Damage has been done. Bad things are happening. Both are attached to infamous legacies. No one can change the past. The only thing to do is move forward to whatever fate awaits them.
I liked the way the plot unraveled. The deep material kept my interest. I recommend checking it out, especially if you love organized crime novels..
