Mad Lizard Mambo by Rhys Ford Review

Kai Gracen has no intention of being anyone’s pawn. A pity Fate and SoCalGov have a different opinion on the matter.

Licensed Stalkers make their living hunting down monsters and dangerous criminals… and their lives are usually brief, brutal, and thankless. Despite being elfin and cursed with a nearly immortal lifespan, Kai didn’t expect to be any different. Then Ryder, the High Lord of the Southern Rise Court, arrived in San Diego, Kai’s not-so-mundane life went from mild mayhem to full-throttle chaos.

Now an official liaison between the growing Sidhe Court and the human populace, Kai is at Ryder’s beck and call for anything a High Lord might need a Stalker to do. Unfortunately for Kai, this means chasing down a flimsy rumor about an ancient lost Court somewhere in the Nevada desert—a court with powerful magics that might save Ryder—and Kai’s—people from becoming a bloody memory in their Merged world’s violent history.

The race for the elfin people’s salvation opens unwelcome windows into Kai’s murky past, and it could also slam the door on any future he might have with his own kind and Ryder.

Review

Mad Lizard Mambo (Kai Gracen, #2)

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
It’s super easy to get wrapped up in the mythology of Kai’s world. Everything takes place in a dystopian version of Earth. There are elves, dragons and different types of monsters. Kai is a stalker. It’s his job to hunt and find objects and creatures in this new world. He’s an elfin hybrid who identifies more with humans but doesn’t quite fit in with any group.
This book is full of fighting and activity. It starts by jumping right in. The excitement is broken up with funny dialogue between Kai and others. Often the other is Ryder who has become a working and possible romantic connection. They don’t agree regularly. Kai is the grump everyone loves. He bristles easily and protects fiercely. Kai, Ryder and company are on a mission to procure something important to the lives of elves. Near the end the suspense gets thick. The horrors of Kai’s past and his natural instincts to do good pull my heartstrings.
I really liked the previous book, but I loved this one. It has everything: action, adventure, humor, suspense, romance and more. I very much recommend to science fiction and fantasy readers.

Kestrel’s Talon by Bey Deckard Review

KESTREL’S TALON (THE STONEWATCHERS #1) BY BEY DECKARD
released May 23, 2016

Novel (135,031 words)

Genre(s): Fantasy, Triad, LGBT/QUILTBAG

Following the Prentish/Nemarri war, Kes is rejected by his homeland under the guise of religious purity laws. Though he’s spared execution, the proud Nemarri’s fate is only marginally more merciful than death when he is sold into sexual slavery at a prosperous pleasure house.

Despite his stoic endurance, Kes knows he’s reaching his breaking point, but there is nothing he can do—there is no path to freedom in the Holy Prentish Empire, only a lifetime of humiliating servitude.

That is, until a beautiful young slave and his formidable master approach Kes in the marketplace and make an astonishing offer to take him home with them. The only problem: “home” is the accursed Horthmont Castle from the scare-stories of Kes’s childhood.

Thrown into a world of living myth, powerful magic, and ancient gods, Kes learns the secrets kept hidden by Horthmont’s thick blackstone walls. There he discovers something he thought he’d never know again: hope for the future.

FROM THE AUTHOR

What to say about this book? Hmm. Well… I like writing triads. I really do. And I love these characters dearly… especially the one not mentioned in the title (you’ll see). It’s not particularly dark… at least I don’t think so. It’s mostly a story about trust and hope and healing.

It was going to be a standalone, but as I was writing it, I realized that it would take more than one book to tell the whole story. So this is the beginning… and I think it’s a good beginning. 🙂

REVIEW

Kestrel's Talon (The Stonewatchers, #1)

4.5 stars
Kestrel’s Talon has a historical fantasy, epic tale feel. Inside is a wholly developed world with separate peoples, laws, gods, mythologies and histories. There are castles, magic, slaves and mysteries. It’s full of unique characters with differences in background, social status, physical stature, sexual identification and so on.
The story begins with Kes. He’s a slave at a pleasure house. For a captured soldier, this is a very tough pill to swallow. One day from across a crowded marketplace, Kes shares a moment of eye contact and connection with a fellow slave that will change his life forever. Talon has a powerful skill and an unbroken spirit. Count is the third piece of the puzzle, a Master. He’s reticent and strong, feared by many and known truly by few.
This story has action, mystique and romance. It’s erotic in parts and full of riddles and symbols. KT is able to pull the reader’s heartstrings while calling to their inner problem solver. Also, this book is great at effortlessly expanding boundaries in sexual orientation. Give it a try. Maybe it’s the exotic novel that’s missing from your life.

The Whispers by Daryl Banner Review

This book can be read as a standalone. Although reading the Beautiful Dead Trilogy would enrich your experience, it is not required.

Synopsis: Jennifer needs to know the truth about the Beautiful Dead. Do they really exist, or is it all a lie?

She faces punishment from the university if she pursues her forbidden Undeadly studies – but she could also change the world. One reckless decision (that may or may not be totally illegal) sends Jennifer and her friends embarking on an adventure of adeathtime to find the truth at last.

She did not expect, however, to discover the fate of all humanity resting in her little Living hands.

REVIEW

The Whispers (A new BEAUTIFUL DEAD Adventure) (The Beautiful Dead, #4)

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I am in love with this world the author has created. I like zompoc books, but he takes everything in a completely unique direction. As stated in the blurb, you don’t have to read The Beautiful Dead trilogy in order to understand and like The Whispers, but if you have read it, you will gain more from and love this new story. There are so many bits with significance. They’re like easter eggs for BD fans.
As usual, I never knew what would happen next in the beautiful dead world. I’m so excited for this new adventure. I have these ideas and questions. Some of the characters are changed so much, and yet, they feel the same. Some characters are complete 180’s from when we first met them.
I just finished reading this so my mind is still reeling. I definitely need some digestion time and a reread. Every page is filled with important information.
I absolutely recommend The Whispers.

Almost Alive by Daryl Banner #TopReads2015 Interview

Almost Alive by Daryl Banner is one of my top reads of 2015.  Daryl Banner, author of The Beautiful Dead, stopped by to answer a few questions about this series and more.
*BOOK #3 IN THE BEAUTIFUL DEAD TRILOGY*
*It is recommended to read this series in order*
THE BEAUTIFUL DEAD (#1)
DEAD OF WINTER (#2)
ALMOST ALIVE (#3)

Twelve years have passed since the devastation.

The world is changed. What once was a planet struggling to survive is now a planet bursting to life. The humans are thriving. Gardens are growing. Trees are reaching up to the sky and the Undeadly clutch on the planet is slowly letting go.

But what does that mean for Winter and her friends?

In the wake of spring, the last of the desperate Undead gather, fighting to maintain their place in a world that no longer wants them. Mother Nature slowly but certainly works to purge the planet of the Dead, just when Winter thought she had finally embraced this Second Life.

Her new friends are back and old nemeses return for the final chapter in Winter’s Undead journey.

INTERVIEW

Your undead are not like traditional zombies.  Was that your plan from the beginning or did the story change?

It was sort of both. I didn’t have a plan at all when I wrote the first pair of chapters. I think that’s where most of my inspiration came from, because I was just surprising myself as I wrote. I started with a very simple idea: an undead society that very much mirrors our own, a female main character who is undead herself, and a living man she meets who, despite his repulsion of her, desperately needs her help.
Explain how you came up with the idea of the world from the Outlier series.
OUTLIER spent a very, very long time in development. It came from an idea I had back in college around 2005. It originally had a modern/contemporary setting, and only some people had special abilities (they were called the Outliers), but soon the show Heroes aired on TV, and I frustratedly couldn’t stop seeing the similarities between my story that I’d already developed and the new TV show, so I abandoned and changed my track.

Over the course of 9 years, I set up the rules of the world of Outlier. I knew that the world needed to be harsh, but also feel like “home”, despite its volatile nature. Centering many of the characters within one family gave me that feeling of home, because I liked checking in with the other brothers and the parents to get a sense of where everyone was at, especially while the world falls apart around them. I loved giving them senses of personal triumph and showing how even the unlikeliest of a “special ability” can save one’s life in a moment of need.
Do you plan your storyline before writing or do you write it as it comes to you?

It really depends on the series. The Brazen Boys – due to their being standalone novellas – are started with a basic idea and (in the case of most of them) an ending, and then I just write them. The Beautiful Dead I “loosely” planned and then wrote it with the intention of surprising myself, as the main character Winter was somewhat hard to control; she had such a mind of her own. OUTLIER, due to its extreme complexity and magnitude of characters (both POV and non-POV characters), I had to plan it out chapter-to-chapter, but still reserved the right to make a split decision and surprise myself. There’s nothing more thrilling than breaking my own carefully-laid-out outlines mid-story.
You have written soundtracks to some of your books.  Do you think of the music as your writing a scene, or does that come later?

I wrote The Beautiful Dead soundtrack after the first novel, then wrote the second and third soundtracks before I wrote the second and third books as a means to keep myself focused and inspired. The music definitely helped me keep consistent with the mood and the flow of the books.
Do you plan to make your works available in audiobook?  What about graphic novels?

I think I’d definitely like to explore audiobooks at some point, as I know it’s quite popular to listen to books on the way to work, or on a jog, or so on. I never considered graphic novels before, though I think that’d be quite a nice avenue to try, should I find the perfect illustrator to team up with!
You’ve written several genres.  Do you enjoy some more than others?  Is there anything that you haven’t tried yet but are looking forward to doing?

My favorite genre to write tends to be the one I’m writing at that moment. Haha. My heart is all over the place and I have to chase the inspiration wherever it takes me. I’d really like to try a pure fantasy novel at some point this year. I do already have a story and idea in mind and I’m already thrilled at the prospect of some day writing it.

What projects are you working on for 2016?

The aforementioned fantasy book is something I’d love to try this year, though it depends if I have the time. So far, I plan to write a brand new M/M novel that may begin a new series, as well as a maybe-standalone M/F romance set in college. I’m also working on a Beautiful Dead novella, and soon will face my biggest project of the year: the third Outlier novel, Outlier: Madness. I’m in the planning stages of that beast.

I’m currently working on a brand new Beautiful Dead novella which, though it follows the third book, CAN be read as a standalone even if you haven’t read the rest of the trilogy. I’ve released the prologue for the new novella as part of the Beautiful Dead Box Set, which includes all 3 full length novels in the series.

Favorites

Dessert – My mom’s triple chocolate pie! (she’d kill me if I said anything else)

Song – I primarily listen to video game music, and that includes thousands of tracks from various games! I couldn’t dare pick a favorite, but my latest soundtrack discoveries have been: Ori and the Blind Forest, Hyper Light Drifter, and Project S-11.

Movie – Inception, because I’m still convinced that I’m stuck inside my own dream and just haven’t woken up yet.

Place to write – My room with the blinds torn open and sunlight painting the walls – or in the dark of my room with my favorite glowy lamps turned on and a nice game soundtrack playing.

Game – Lately, it’s been Ori and the Blind Forest. Usually, I favor World of Warcraft, any Final Fantasy, and any Metroid, Zelda, or Castlevania game. I’m also a huge fan of simulation/sandbox games like Sim City or Rollercoaster Tycoon.

Winter Oranges by Marie Sexton #TopReads2015 Interview

Winter Oranges is one of my top reads for 2015. I contacted Marie Sexton and she agreed to answer some questions. Also keep reading for an excerpt from her upcoming novel Trailer Trash coming soon from Riptide Publishing.
Jason Walker is a child star turned teen heartthrob turned reluctant B-movie regular who’s sick of his failing career. So he gives up Hollywood for northern Idaho, far away from the press, the drama of LA, and the best friend he’s secretly been in love with for years.

There’s only one problem with his new life: a strange young man only he can see is haunting his guesthouse. Except Benjamin Ward isn’t a ghost. He’s a man caught out of time, trapped since the Civil War in a magical prison where he can only watch the lives of those around him. He’s also sweet, funny, and cute as hell, with an affinity for cheesy ’80s TV shows. And he’s thrilled to finally have someone to talk to.

But Jason quickly discovers that spending all his time with a man nobody else can see or hear isn’t without its problems—especially when the tabloids find him again and make him front-page news. The local sheriff thinks he’s on drugs, and his best friend thinks he’s crazy. But Jason knows he hasn’t lost his mind. Too bad he can’t say the same thing about his heart.

INTERVIEW

Winter Oranges is so magical, like a fairytale for adults.  How in the world, did the idea for this story come to you?

I can’t take the credit, actually. I’d promised a holiday story to Riptide, but I wasn’t really sure what to write, so I asked for suggestions on Twitter. One person (@JenW2468) said she’d always wanted to read about somebody trapped in a snow globe. It seemed a bit crazy, but the more I thought about it, the more I loved the idea.

What is your favorite book from childhood?

I’d have to say The Great Brain, by John D. Fitzgerald. I loved the entire series, and I think that’s where I developed my affinity for (possibly untrustworthy) first-person narrators.

Which authors have been the biggest influence on your writing?

Probably Lynn Flewelling, because it was her Nightrunner series that led me to gay romance, and it was reading gay romance that made me suddenly want to write.

If you could travel anywhere in the world (money was no object) describe the trip you would take.

Oh, man. That’s hard. I’d have to do tons of research, but the trip would definitely include:
  1. An igloo at Hotel Kakslauttanen, to see the Northern Lights (https://www.pinterest.com/pin/488570259545734585/)
  2. A few days in Lofoten, Norway (https://www.pinterest.com/pin/488570259555854296/)
  3. A week or two in the Alsace region of France
  4. Another week or two in the Alps, checking out places like Hallstatt. Austria (https://www.pinterest.com/pin/488570259556175606/)
  5. Some time in Spain, drinking sangria
  6. A stay at Giraffe Manor in Nairobi
  7. Ending up at some lovely resort in Jamaica

If you had a time machine, would you go back in time or visit the future?

I’d go back in time and find out whether or not Lizzy Borden was guilty.

For your own reading, do you prefer ebooks or traditional paper/hard back books?

Paperbacks, all the way. I’ve just never adapted to ebooks. I own two Kindles, but I hardly ever use them. (My husband and daughter do, though.)

What book/s are you reading at present?
Practical Magic, by Alice Hoffman

What projects are you working on for 2016?

Next up is Trailer Trash. I originally started this book way back in 2011, but I knew it was going to get super angsty, and I just wasn’t ready to go there. I’ve always known I’d end up finishing it eventually, though, so last November, I decided to tackle it as my unofficial NaNo project. I didn’t think it would take much to finish. Well, I wrote 50k on it in November, but that wasn’t enough. The book ended up being far more complicated than I anticipated, and it might be the angstiest thing I’ve ever written. The good news is, it’s done now, and I’m really excited about it.

Trailer Trash is a new adult novel about two high school seniors set in 1986 in small-town Wyoming. It’s available for pre-order now.

And for those who’d like a little less angst, I have Damned If You Do coming from Samhain in June. It’s a fun little romantic comedy about a slacker devil trying to claim the soul of a very devout young musician at a tent revival.

Favorites

Pie– My late grandma’s homemade lemon meringue. Barring that, probably pumpkin.
Indoor activity– Eating
Purse– At the moment, this one! I made it a couple of weeks ago. (Sorry the picture is blurry!)
Genre to read– Right now, historical mysteries. I also read a lot of thrillers and horror.
Genre to write– Romance, of course. LOL. But I especially love the friends-to-lovers trope.

EXCERPT

I’ll share a bit from Trailer Trash, but with the disclaimer that this is an unedited excerpt (the book is still in edits, because it took me AGES to finish).
Nate had told Cody he’d meet him after lunch, but he ended up going to the field right after he got out of bed. It was a bit after eleven when he arrived, and Cody was already there, a half-empty pack of cigarettes in his hand.
“Wind’s still blowing,” Nate said as he sat down.
“Welcome to Wyoming.”
He didn’t even glance Nate’s way. A brand new day, and somehow Nate knew he was starting fresh with Cody. Whatever camaraderie they’d shared the day before had been wiped away in the night.
“I hear it’s really nice up in the northern part of the state,” he said, in an attempt to make conversation.
Cody sighed and tapped a cigarette into his hand. “I hear that too. I wouldn’t know.” He tucked the rest of the pack into the upper pocket of his jean jacket and pulled out a lighter. Nate waited while he turned away, cupping his hand against the wind to get it lit.
“How long have you lived here?”
Cody blew smoke, his other hand clenching around his lighter. “My whole fucking life.”
“Well, you graduate this year, right? Then you can leave. Maybe go to college—“
“Ha!” Cody shook his head, leaning forward to put his elbows on his knees. “Yeah, right. College.”
Nate wasn’t sure what that meant. Maybe his grades weren’t good enough, or—
“There’s no leaving this town. Didn’t I tell you it’s the black hole of modern civilization? I meant it, man. There’s no escape. You’re born here, you knock up some chick, then you die here. That’s how it goes.”
“Uh…” Nate had no idea how to tackle that happy thought. “You’re planning on knocking somebody up?”
Cody laughed without much humor and contemplated the smoldering cigarette between his fingers. “Pretty sure nobody actually plans that. Don’t change anything, though. Gotta have money to leave, and by the time you’ve got it, it’s too late.”
“I don’t care what you say. I’m leaving, as soon as I can. Packing up my car the night before graduation and leaving five minutes after they put that diploma in my hand.”
“And going where?”
“Home, I guess, for the summer at least. Then I’m moving to Chicago.” Cody frowned at him, and Nate hurried to elaborate. “My aunt lives there. She’s a real estate agent, and she owns a bunch of houses and apartments. She has one she said I could use while I go to school.”
Cody ground out the last of his cigarette against the side of the wagon and tossed the butt angrily into the wind. “Lucky you.”
Nate studied him for a moment, taking in the holes in the knees of his jeans, and the way they ended a bit short of his ankles. The arms of his denim jacket left his bony wrists exposed. His tennis shoes had holes in both toes.
A small knot of shame formed in Nate’s stomach as he finally realized it wasn’t grades standing between Cody and college. He thought about Warren — windblown streets lined with lifeless, dusty buildings. No flowers. No joy. No jobs. Even the houses seemed to droop in defeat. The people he’d seen didn’t look much better. Dead-eyed women not much older than him dragging their screaming kids through the grocery store. The line of rusty pickup trucks parked outside the shitty, seedy bar on the far side of town, no matter what time of day it was.
Maybe Cody was right. Maybe there was no escape.
Nate cleared my throat, trying to think of something that hinted at hope. “My mom always says, ‘Despair is anger with no place to go.’”
Cody chuckled and put his head down. He ran his hands through his straight black hair. “I guess that makes me Despair, then.”
“My mom also says, ‘When it’s dark enough, you can see the stars.’”
“Oh yeah? Well, my mom says, ‘If the world didn’t suck, we’d fall off.’”
Nate laughed. He wasn’t sure if Cody had intended it as a joke or not, but either way, Nate couldn’t help it. Cody looked over at him in surprise. “Well,” Nate said, still laughing a bit, “at least I know where you get your cheery disposition.”
Cody blinked at him once as he tried to decide how to take that comment, but then he gave Nate a grudging smile. “And I guess I know where you get yours.”
“Yeah.” Now it was Nate’s turn to duck his head in hopes of hiding his expression. It was true his mother had always been happy and upbeat. Right up until May, when she’d walked into Nate’s bedroom and casually told him she was leaving his dad.
“Your mom sounds like some kind of brainiac or something.”
“She’s an English teacher.”
“Will she be teaching at the high school?”
“No.” Nate couldn’t look at him. He twisted the class ring on his finger, watching the way the sun glinted off the light blue stone. “She didn’t move here with us. She’s still back in Austin.”
Cody didn’t respond right away, and when Nate finally glanced up, he found Cody looking at him with more compassion then he’d seen from him before. “That sucks.”
“You have no idea.” As soon as Nate said the words, he realized maybe he shouldn’t have. He didn’t know anything about Cody’s family situation. It was possible Cody knew exactly how Nate felt. He wondered if he should apologize, but Cody didn’t seem bothered.
“When I was a kid, it seemed like I was the only one whose parents were split.” Cody looked toward the distant motion of the highway again, as if it held some kind of answer. “People were always asking me why my last name was different from my mom’s. Used to piss me off. But the older I get, the more it seems like the norm, you know? I don’t know if there really are more divorces now, or if it’s just because I’m more aware of it.”
Nate had always been vaguely aware of the idea of divorce, but somehow he’d always assumed it only happened to kids with fucked up home lives. Somehow, he’d assumed the “broken home” came first, and the divorce second. He hadn’t quite realized that the divorce was often what made it “broken.”
“I guess I thought it couldn’t happen to me,” he said.
He hated it. Hated his life and his parents and the fact that he was now on of those kids. He hated coming home to a house where his mother’s music wasn’t playing. He hated having to do his own laundry and the fact that there was never a pot of soup on the stove or a batch of cookies in the oven, and the fact that he never, ever woke up to pancakes and bacon for breakfast. He hated knowing he’d taken those things for granted for so many years. And more than anything, he fucking hated Wyoming.
“Hey,” Cody said, and when Nate looked over at him, Cody smiled. “When it’s dark enough, you can see the stars.”
Nate tried to smile back, but failed. “I only see the dark.”
“Me too.” Cody nudged Nate’s knee with his own, and this time, Nate did manage to smile a little. “Guess it gives us a reason to keep looking up.”

Daryl Banner is a writer and composer who graduated from the University of Houston with a degree in Theatre and Psychology.

He does not write in any single genre, as his stories tend to span several. He is most inspired by the smart and unlikely hero, but urges you (the reader) not to fall in love with them; they may deceive you with their innocence. He is thrilled by putting his characters in terrible situations where they must face choices and challenges that seem impossible to overcome.

Daryl Banner writes contemporary fiction, sci-fi/fantasy (both in medieval and futuristic senses), unique takes on the apocalypse and paranormal romance genre, as well as magic realism. He cannot wait to hear what you think about his stories and welcomes (and responds to!) all feedback.

Interesting tidbits: Daryl is also an obsessive piano player, video game enthusiast, and occasional actor. He’s been remixing video game music for over fifteen years, and is a passionate Final Fantasy fan. You can feed your ears with many of his remixes (as well as his original music) on his YouTube page “www.youtube.com/DarylBanner”. Also, he personally answers all emails he receives, so if you have some strange desire to write him, he may enjoy it. He currently resides in Texas.

REVIEW

The Beautiful Dead Trilogy Box Set (Includes: Bonus Short Story & New Beautiful Dead Novella Sneak Peek)

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
The Beautiful Dead is one of my all time favorites. I can’t say enough how highly I recommend it. It’s YA fantasy, post-apocalyptic and great for male and female ages tween to adult.
I never had any idea what would happen next. If I had 100 guesses to figure out where the plot was headed, in most parts of the story, I would have still gotten it wrong.
This series is entertaining and philosophical at the same time. There are many life-lessons inside its the-adventure-never-stops words.
From all of the varying emotions, I probably looked like someone missing their meds while reading. I was smirking at the smart dark comedy, laughing out loud at the true humor, having creepy cringes, tearing up, wowing in silence, etc.
It’s very imaginative and original with plenty of action. There are undead, giant spiders, magical rocks and loads more attention-grabbers. The plot is very steady, no falling off, no getting stagnate. Every character is on a mission.
Matters of the heart are also a part. Friendship, familial love and romance all play roles in the overall storyline. These characters have been through a lot with each other in life and death. It’s very touching and tearful. Prepare yourself for some major feels before you get to the end.
The preview of what’s to come really has me spinning with so many questions. Of course, I have no hope of working out how the author is going to blow my mind next, but I’ll be waiting on the edge of my seat for it.

REVIEW

The Darkest Frost: Volume 2 (TDF #2)

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Wow, this story is so different from the PNR’s that I’ve read. It’s a detective mystery combined with a romantic fantasy.
Denieve has a type of psychic gift, which she uses to go undercover to figure out criminal activity. She knows there’s something big going on behind the scenes after meeting the Frost brothers. Even with murders and deceptions surrounding Braeden and Xavier, she still cannot deny the attraction she feels. To top it all, she’s falling for both of them. And an even bigger worry is that she has started to suffer from an unknown illness since living under Dr. Death’s roof.
Volume 2 picks up right where volume 1 left off and opens up to a much bigger world than I imagined. The things that are happening with the Frost brothers and Denieve have a much broader impact than expected. More in depth explanations of everyone’s past is given also.
“He’s the darkest Frost. Not me. He’s the one who needed a heart. So I gave him one.”
I know my review is kind of vague, but I didn’t want to give away spoilers. The most fun for me while reading was trying to figure out which brother I love more, which characters are good or bad and which of my predictions were correct. For me this series was unexpected, entertaining and fulfilling. PNR lovers should definitely check it out.

A DANGEROUS ALLURE
Bestowed with eternal life by the Ancient Vasilios, Alasdair Kyriakous is one of the most feared and ruthless vampires in existence. His name carries weight across all of the seven continents.
But he is a mystery to his kind, an anomaly among the self-indulgent. While he enjoys the pleasures of the flesh, he is exceptionally particular in his choice of partners and prides himself on his ironclad self-control.
Yet with one look his control will become a thing of the past, and Alasdair will discover that eternal life doesn’t always last forever…
A DEADLY ATTRACTION

A FORBIDDEN DESIRE
Unaware that they’ve been brought together by an outside force and are little more than pawns to a higher power, Alasdair and Leo spend time trying to uncover the other’s secrets, the attraction between them growing stronger all the while.
But enemies are watching and preparing to act against them. When decisions that will alter lives and destinies have to be made—can a dead, grey heart learn to beat again?

Excerpt

With no more than a flash of thought, he was inside the man’s room and standing at the foot of a large bed.
Locks. Such a useless human defense.
He cocked his head to the side and examined the book splayed open on the man’s naked chest. It looked as though it had fallen there when he’d drifted off to sleep, his fingers still resting against the glossy cover.
Heroes, Gods, and Monsters of the Greek Myths.
Now that is an unlikely coincidence.
A sinister smile morphed Alasdair’s lips, and he touched the tip of his tongue to the fangs elongating from his upper gums. The familiar surge of adrenaline caused his skin to come alive with awareness as his body prepared itself to do what it had been created for.
Raising his hand, he flicked his wrist and the covers whisked back. The man beneath was no more aware of the action than a slight shift in the air as a low sigh escaped him and he stretched his body, turning his head on the pillow.
The sight that greeted Alasdair made the hours he’d spent tracking well worth the time. When the human took a breath, the knotted drawstring tie of his linen lounge pants caught his attention. Fuck, that made him want to indulge his carnal side first.
Maybe this was the root of his current obsession. In fact, that thought was followed by one truer to his perverse nature. How long would it take to have him clutching those covers from lust if I wanted it? And as Alasdair continued to observe the human, he realized just how much he wanted it.
The chest where the book was lying was covered in a light dusting of blond hair. It trailed a path along the center of the man’s sternum to his stomach, which looked as hard as his own. However, unlike his own abdomen, this man’s skin would be warm to the touch.
Perhaps he could take a moment or two and… No, he didn’t have the time, and that really was a shame. A meeting had been called this evening, and he was due at the Assembly Hall soon. The last thing he wanted to do was piss off the Ancients by being late.
So, with the speed and the stealth only his kind possessed, he was on the bed and stretched out above the man, and his mouth hovered over the ear closest to him.
He threw the book, which landed with a loud thump on the floor, and couldn’t stop himself from slipping one of his hands beneath those thin pants to curl his fingers around the flaccid cock he found inside. When a soft groan left the human, Alasdair used his other hand to capture his captive’s wrists like iron shackles and pin them above his head. Before the man had a chance to wake, he delved inside his head and projected an image of where this hunt would finally end.

REVIEW

Alasdair (Masters Among Monsters, #1)

4.5 stars
Mmmm, this book is so lustful. The author has created an all-star cast. They are gloooooorious, and the sexual tension almost melted the screen off my kindle. I’m talking about the finest specimens to ever exist combined with over 2,000 years of learned charm and earned power. Then, throw in Greek history and gods. It all boils down to survival and desire. And that ending…oh yeah, baby. These vampires are just too seductive for my well being.
Alasdair’s plot is über mysterious. Besides the current attraction, there is an overall big story unfolding with hints and flashbacks dropped here and there. The reader has to try to figure out who the characters are to each other and what it all means for the future.
Masters Among Monsters is a full-on dessert smorgasbord, and I’ve only licked the spoon. I can’t wait for more.

The Dark Ones by Rachel Van Dyken Blog Tour Review

The Dark Ones

Release Date: Sept 20, 2015

BLURB
To touch a Dark One is death.
To talk to an immortal is suicide.
Yet, I’ve been marked by both.
A Vampire.
And the King of the immortals.
My life is no longer my own.
And now I know the truth, my life was never mine to begin with.
It was theirs.
It’s always been theirs.

EXCERPT:
I still tasted her blood on my lips, was embarrassed for the first time in a century when Alex glanced up from his spot at the kitchen table to see me licking my lips like I’d just devoured the poor girl.
He shook his head. “Been that long, huh?”
“Alex…” I closed my eyes and prayed for patience. “…remind me why I let you live here?”
“I’m good-looking,” he answered simply. “Besides, I’m a hell of a fighter — scrappy, I think is how you define my kind. You need me.”
“Stop.” I pressed my fingertips to my temples and rubbed. The ache to have her had consumed me so much that I’d run down the stairs moving so fast I’d nearly collided with a wall, and grabbed blood from the fridge.
I didn’t need it.
But I craved it.
And if I didn’t drink the donated blood, I sure as hell was going to drain her and enjoyed very last drop.
“I wonder” Alex’s voice pierced my thoughts. “What’s it like?” He leaned forward. “Having to learn self-control all over again… being as ancient as you are?”
I ignored him.
He kept talking.
“Blood-free for a century and now…” He grinned and licked his lips. “Kind of like falling off the wagon, yeah?”
“You’re giving me a headache.” I threw the empty bag of blood at his face. He moved to the side and snickered. “And I’m fine. Everything is just—”
Her smell was intoxicating. She was walking down the stairs, so her heart picked up speed, her body giving off a scent of burnt vanilla and oranges with a hint of sugar. My mouth literally watered.
“Fine?” Alex said in a mocking voice. “Was that what you were going to say? Damn, man show a little decorum, you look… starved.”
“I am,” I whispered and fought the urge to rock back and forth. That was the problem with mating — with bonding. Nothing tasted like her, nothing ever would, and typically, having her as my mate gave me full access.
But the more I took…
The stronger the bond.
And the more I wanted…
It was a vicious overwhelming cycle. It would lead me to become emotionally invested while she, as a human, could simply pretend.
It wasn’t fair.
Immortals, in essence, were cursed with a deep desire to be like a human — to possess them, to bond with them forever — while humans only felt the same draw to us if they actually loved us.
Ridiculous.
“Oh, there you are.” Stephanie pushed Genesis forward and pulled out a chair.
Slowly, Genesis took a seat and glared at each one of us. “Where’s Mason?”
It shouldn’t have pissed me off.
But it had.
“He’s none of your concern,” I spat.
“Easy!” Alex chuckled. “Rule number one, don’t ask your mate where the other dude is. Just… don’t.”
Genesis blinked at Alex then back at me. “Because you guys have the capacity for jealousy.”
Alex whistled while Stephanie laughed.
Immortals were the most jealous beings on the planet. Had her school taught her nothing?
Was I to be her tutor as well?
“So…” Alex trained his eyes on her, putting her at as much ease as he could without stopping her poor heart. “Now that the mating is complete, you get to learn all about us and service your man here.” He slapped my back.
Really. Really. Poor choice of words.
Genesis paled.
I rolled my eyes. “He’s kidding.”
Alex laughed. “I think it needs to be said that having a human at the house has already helped my mood immensely.”
“That makes one of you,” Genesis said under her breath.
Alex leaned forward and whispered, “Ethan, try not to be so grouchy. Keep the fangs in and all.”
I extended them just to prove a point.
Genesis recoiled.
I instantly felt guilty.
Damn it.
“You won’t…” I licked my lips. “You won’t have to service me, as Alex so delicately put it.”
“Is that what mates do?” Genesis asked, her eyes searching mine. “They…” She lifted her hands into the air and dropped them.
“If that’s what you think they do, we have a very big problem.” Alex mimicked her movements and winked.
She blushed.
I hissed at him and returned my attention to her. “It’s like a human relationship, only stronger. You’ll attend functions with me, be by my side, at my beck and call for as long as you live.”
I didn’t want to say until one day she just didn’t wake up. It sounded too cruel.
“And when I’m bored out of my mind… I do what?” She crossed her arms. “I mean, what could you possibly need from me?”
“Adorable.” Alex sighed happily. “I’m so glad we kept her.”
“Alex…” I was two seconds away from slamming him into the nearest wall. “Make yourself useful and find our human a snack.”
“I’m not a pet!” Genesis yelled. “And I’m not your human!”
“You are,” I yelled right back, “mine!”
“Kids.” Stephanie stepped between us.
I didn’t even realize I’d gotten out of the chair and was towering over her, fangs out, hands raised. She’d turned me into a monster. And still, my eyes found her erratic pulse. One more taste…
“Ethan—” Stephanie pushed against my chest. I didn’t move. “Ethan!”
“Friend…” Mason walked into the room. “Sit your ass down before she hands it to you.”
“Like she could!” I roared.
“Like I have!” Stephanie pushed me again. “Don’t tempt me… again.”
I sat, while Mason made his way over to Genesis and offered an easy smile. The man had nothing to smile about, yet he was smiling — at my mate.
I growled.
Mason gave me the finger and kept his attention trained on Genesis. “How do you feel?”
“Better.” She returned his smile and squeezed his outstretched hand. “Thanks for not… killing me when I asked.”
“Damn…” Alex said from the kitchen.
“You were in pain.” Mason shrugged. “And I’m glad you’re alright.”
“She’s fine. We’re fine. Everything’s fine,” I said through clenched teeth. “Now it’s probably time to give her answers before she thinks she can run off and actually survive in the real world without being hunted by a Dark One, or worse, found by Cassius.”
“He isn’t all bad,” Stephanie said defensively.
We all glared at her.
“What?” She lifted her hands into the air. “I’m just saying he’s been trying as hard as we have. So what if he’s gotten a bit possessive over the last few numbers that have been called.”
Alex slammed his fist onto the table. “He stole Ethan’s—”
“Enough.” I held up my hand. The pain in my chest grew until it was hard to breathe. I knew what would take that pain away.
Genesis.
But I was too angry to ask for it. Too ashamed to fall to my knees in front of a mere mortal and beg for her to end the pain by allowing me one solitary drop of her blood.
As if on cue, another bag of blood hit me in the head.
Alex must have sensed my mood.
I bit into it and looked away from Genesis’s horrified expression.

REVIEW

The Dark Ones

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I started this when I went to bed one night, thinking I would just have a taste. Then, I looked over at the clock, and two hours had passed without me noticing. If you like supernatural attraction which cannot be denied, this is probably a book for you.
The elders are a group of leaders of the main species: vampire, werewolf, siren and Dark One. There’s a sexy fantasy man for everyone (most likely you’ll want them all). Genesis is a human girl who has been summoned to the council. She thinks she knows, but she has no idea of the world she’s entered. Her arrival has been prophesied.
I really like how these leaders are like brothers instead of being pitted against one another. Many times in stories they’re natural enemies. There are bad guys and antagonist, but it isn’t quite what you would normally expect.
Reading The Dark Ones was a blast. I will continue with the rest of the series.

Amber Smoke by Kristin Cast Review

Title:  Amber Smoke (The Escaped #1)
Author:  Kristin Cast
Publisher:  Diversion Books
ISBN:  9781626815520
Publishing Date:  June 9, 2015
Genre:  New Adult, Fantasy

There is a world that runs parallel to our own, a world in which the souls of the damned are caged, where they are looked over by the Furies, and where they spend eternity in torment, mirroring the devastation and mayhem they created when alive.

Someone has opened the cage.
The worst of terrors has crossed the barrier that separates our world from theirs, and the Furies send a great, albeit untested warrior—their only son, Alek—to try to bring those souls back. He is young and handsome, headstrong and impulsive, and he won’t be able to do it alone.
Eva has grown up, beautiful and beloved, but surrounded by secrets. First, she will be hunted in an ancient feud that will threaten her life. Then, she will become the hunter.
With the police closing in and two worlds on the verge of crumbling around them, Alek and Eva must find each other, discover the limits of their powers, and work together to save everything they hold dear, including one another. Blending elements of mythology with the dazzling storytelling that her fans have devoured through the House of Nightseries, Kristin Cast weaves a spellbinding and passionate tale that starts a thrilling new series with an explosive charge.

Amber Smoke (The Escaped #1)

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Amber Smoke is my first time reading this author; thus, I went in with no preconceived notions on what was to come. The blurb seemed interesting so I wanted to give it a try. This novel is a mix of suspense, murder mystery, action, mild humor, detective, Greek mythology, heroic fantasy and NA romance told in third person omniscient point of view.
It begins in Tartarus with the Furies. An authentic tale similar to the classic ones told of gods and heroes is given to set the reason behind everything in the series. Although, I believe it to be as good as any of the myths through history, this starting bit is my least favorite part.
Most of the storyline takes place in the real world. Many characters and sequences come together in this first installment of The Escaped series. Eva is a college student who lives with her single mother. They are very close. She and her best friend are spoiled, but they aren’t bad girls. Alek is on a quest to find Eva. Not being from this realm, he has no understanding of many things which provides some light comedy. Murders have been happening. Detectives are trying to solve these cases. During some of the scenes, I was so nervous I was leaning on the edge of my seat inhaling the words. At one point, I was reading late at night in the dark and got the creeps so badly that I had to get up and turn on the light.
The writing is fantastic. The plot sucked me and left me yearning for the next installment. I recommend this story for readers who like YA fantasy but want something more mature. I really want the next book. Now.
